Themes are the same in every book, which may be some readers cup of tea, there are no real surprises in plot and outcome, however, the ideology of Catholicism at the time is realistic, as are the prejudices. But, the fact of the matter is that although we the readers can tell that Spence is fighting against his growing feelings for her, Mercy is not aware of this fact.

an excellent story of ordinary and limited people in extraordinary and constrained circumstances. This obscured the moral dimension of the issue. Better still, how about a sequel.
